Collaborative Law

Collaborative divorce centers on a team approach to resolve conflict.  Both parties are represented by their own attorneys who help clients find mutually beneficial resolutions in a respectful and cooperative atmosphere. When needed, financial and mental health professionals are made part of the team. All attorneys at the Law Offices of Karen S. Law are trained collaborative attorneys.

Mediation

Mediation is a voluntary and confidential out-of-court process in which a couple can negotiate their divorce issues.  The mediator helps you and your spouse reach an agreement on custody, parenting, support, and distribution of marital assets and debts. All attorneys at the Law Offices of Karen S. Law have received extensive mediation training.

Litigation/Appeals

When two parties cannot agree, sometimes a court action is required.  In a court action, a judge will determine the disputed issues.  If you are unhappy with the court’s decision, an appeal can be filed.  At the Law Offices of Karen S. Law, our attorneys have extensive litigation experience, successfully arguing cases in the Superior Court of New Jersey, the New Jersey Appellate Division, and the New Jersey Supreme Court.

We’re here to help

Law Offices of Karen S. Law

Divorce is hard.  At the Law Offices of Karen S. Law, we make it easier.  Our experienced attorneys are passionate about finding the best resolution for your unique circumstances.  Whether you need a neutral mediator, a collaborative attorney, or an experienced litigator, we can help.

Why We Do This

At the Law Offices of Karen S. Law, we want, first and foremost, to understand what is most important to you. We know that every family dynamic is unique and so is every divorce matter. This is why the attorneys at Karen S. Law are skilled in both out of court settlements (collaborative law and mediation) as well as courtroom advocacy (litigation and appeals). We will help you find a process which is best suited for your individual circumstances.

The attorneys at Karen S. Law have a strong litigation background and have successfully advocated for clients at all New Jersey court levels and in federal court. Where cases require intervention from the court, we provide vigorous representation. At the same time, we recognize that litigation can be expensive, stressful, and put unnecessary strain on families. Many people may be able to resolve divorce and divorce-related issues respectfully and amicably outside of court, saving financial and emotional resources.

Mediation and collaborative law are often faster and less expensive alternatives to litigation. A hallmark of both is focus on goals. How would do you see yourself and your family after the divorce? How can we put together a settlement focused on your future?

Another critical element of mediation and collaborative law is emphasis on respectful communications for all involved, clients and attorneys. Divorce is stressful enough. More yelling is not helpful. What is needed is a calm, stress-free atmosphere where you and your spouse can make thoughtful decisions.

Creativity is another advantage of using mediation or collaborative law over litigation. Courtroom judges have hundreds of cases and are bound by specific laws in setting forth their decisions. Settling your matter outside of court not only allows you to decide your case for yourselves but, also to fashion a settlement in a manner which may not be available in the court.

In sum and on a personal note, the attorneys at the Law Offices of Karen S. Law are ourselves spouses and parents of young children and teenagers. We understand that balancing working and family obligations on top of a divorce action may be one of the most difficult experiences you encounter. We cannot eliminate the stress completely but we can help to make the process easier. It is our goal to handle every matter as an advocate but, also, with compassion and understanding.
